Berlin---what do YOU think?

So-I am in need of some advice.
I found out quite by chance that there is an audition for the Berlin Philharmonic on the 15th of October.
I am quite tempted to take the audition; here is a short pros and cons list.

Pros:
A chance like this may never present itself again
You have to take the opportunities that present themselves
It would be something like the dream job, if it were to come to fruition
It would be a good chance to stay motivated, to learn and to grow
Just taking the audition would be a good learning experience
I have very little to lose

Cons:
I was so enjoying not being under pressure for the first time in as long as I can remember. I'm not sure I'm doing myself any favors by putting myself in the frying pan again
I may risk alienating some of my colleagues if I make moves to leave right after I've gotten here
I would like more time to learn and to grow into a position like that. I feel like I'm a bit too young
I am just starting to get used to being a Hamburger

So what do you think?

Hope to hear from you soon!

Erik

  1. Erik, you know what I think (I think)- the main thing here is what do YOU think? Think about it! Anyway, you'll be fine either way-

  2. Boy, that's a tough one. It's the kind of problem you WANT to have, but it's a tough one.

In your place, I would take the audition just for the experience, and if it ends up with a job offer, well, that's ANOTHER "problem you want to have."

Also, you should take the audition if you found out about the opportunity from a contact, a professional friend, a mentor, or an invite from the organization's directors . This insures that they don't feel that time and effort invested in networking with you isn't wasted or disregarded.

Think of it this way: you are reasonably happy where you are. That takes some of the "career survival" pressure off you, and you can actually do the prep and training as an opportunity, not a necessity.

    Best of luck!

  3. I think it would be a good idea to take the audition - if only to keep your auditioning skills sharp. If you get offered the position, or a callback, you can think about the whole thing again.

Like ABW says, it's a problem you want to have. Also, remember, we're all behind you, whatever you do.

  4. Hey buddy!

Looks like folks above have summed up my thoughts pretty well. Perhaps the one thing to add would be: if one of your pros is "It would be something like the dream job, if it were to come to fruition", then none of the cons should be strong enough to keep you from at least trying.
